IRON WOLF

Original by Josh Jones

About This Piece

Iron Wolf is an original character conceived as a symbolic warrior figure, drawing inspiration from the visual traditions, histories, and imagery of Indigenous peoples of the American Southwest and Great Plains. His name joins two ideas: iron, representing strength and resilience, and the wolf, representing instinct, hunting, movement, and an intimate relationship with the natural world. The composition incorporates symbols drawn from Indigenous traditions. In the upper-left corner is the Zia sun symbol, a sacred emblem of Zia Pueblo whose four sets of rays represent the four directions, four seasons, four parts of the day, and four stages of life. In the upper-right, the spiral references interpretations of spiral imagery associated with migration and the journey of a people through the landscape. The opposing arrows at lower right are used within the painting to symbolize war and conflict, reinforcing Iron Wolf’s aggressive stance and identity as a warrior.
